General Submission Guidelines

These are general guidelines. Additional, specific guidelines for the various sections of the magazine are below. Please read all the way to the bottom.

-With rare exceptions, all work printed in the magazine is compensated.
(Important note: We do not pay for Op-Ed pieces)

-Simultaneous submissions are acceptable, as long as you notify the UP editors if your piece is accepted elsewhere. Failure to do this may result in an embargo on any future pieces submitted to us.

- We welcome the pitching of story ideas. To avoid delayed responses, please send a summary of your idea to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with the subject line: Story Pitch

-When submitting your idea, allow at least two weeks for a response.

-Place your submission in an attached Microsoft Word file. Do not paste it.

-Format the document correctly. I.e. put only one space between each of your sentences.

-UP holds exclusive rights (on the Internet and in print) of any commissioned work. Credit is given to author but Mondeas Ltd. retains the rights.

Sections (Specific Guidelines on How to Submit Your Work)

UPFront
This is where we run our main Editorial, a selection of opinion pieces and Letters to the Editor (The Wire). In most cases, the op-ed pieces are theme-specific. Op-Ed length/quantity: 1 essay 500-700 words

What’s UP
Events calendar that features unique, one-off events in the main column with recurrent (daily/weekly/monthly) events in the margins.

Content: description of event, venue, ticket prices, timings etc accompanied by high-res event image (1MB/300dpi/JPEG). No posters please.

UPTown
This is the arts and culture section in the magazine. It covers music, art, literature, fashion, food, film, theatre and occasionally sports, architecture and interior design. Article length/quantity: Continuous prose 220-500 words.

UpNext
Here we feature trends in business, technology and other spheres of innovation. Article length/quantity: Continuous prose 350-600 words.

Urban Presence
This is the journalistic hub of the magazine. Here we focus on investigative pieces, reports and insights into politics, environment, city planning and much more. Article length/quantity: continuous prose 600-1200 words.

Internship

Internships are offered twice a year (April-June, August-October) on a competitive basis. Interested parties should forward 2 samples of their best writing and a cover letter.
