Through the Lens: A look into the world of Enos Olik

Enos Olik is a quirky guy. He gesticulates a lot while talking—probably a byproduct of his day-to-day profession and passion, which is directing music videos. When you meet the man, it is obvious that he has a talent and a drive that doesn’t give him much time to rest. A drive that has resulted in over 60 music videos during the last two years, allowing him to work together with artists like Dela, Shem and Grace Muna. But Enos is not a man who limits himself to one vocation.
A former animation teacher at Arena Multi Media School for Animation , he is now a member of the band Aziza, where he plays the roles of singer/composer and guitarist, as well as being the band’s creative director. Now with a newfound passion for seeing the world through a lens, Enos is entertaining a new set of demands, working primarily with music videos. “This is showbiz, so the video must boost the artist and their song’s profile, especially on the web,” he says.
Enos draws inspiration from 24-year-old Colin Tilley, an American music video director who has written and directed for such artists as Chris Brown. Back home, he works hard to come up with at least 90% of his video concepts, though some musicians and bands come to Enos with a clear vision already in mind. And while working with Sub Sahara Records this year, he got a chance to team up with the renowned Nigerian director, Clarence Peters, in filming a slew of music videos for successful hip-hop group Camp Mulla. Enos says, “Clarence didn’t come to Kenya with any equipment. Everything was hired locally. What stood out was [his] decisiveness and experience. And, yes, the money spent, a reminder that cheap is expensive.” Judging from the number of new singles debuting on local music shows, there is a demand for accompanying visuals. So, what does Enos have to offer? “I am no longer working on low-budget videos, as international standards require not only a great song but also high-quality productions. And through me, that’s what the Kenyan market is setting out for,” he firmly states. Enos is currently directing/co-producing “Hyped East Africa,” a reality travel/entertainment show about East Africa on Zuku TV. To see his work, visit www. YouTube.com/enosolik.
